‘Nerve-tingling political blockbuster’ – Daily Express

Texas, 1963

America’s youngest president is visiting Dallas, driving through Dealey Plaza in an open car.

Then shots ring out, and President Cassidy’s glamorous wife, Suzanne, finds her bright pink suit soaked in her husband’s blood.

But this president is not dead. President John T Cassidy is terribly wounded, but he’s still alive. Just…

As President Cassidy begins his slow and painful recovery, his dynastic family is determined to maintain its grip on political power, despite the manoeuvrings of political rivals.

The authorities try to find out who shot President Cassidy, and why?

It seems that the first of those questions is quickly answered, as a gunman is arrested and then assassinated himself. The Dallas police are content that justice has been done.

But for one FBI agent, the answers are not so clear-cut and Agent Sullivan begins his own search for the truth.

Meanwhile, the social changes that marked the 1960s are unfolding.

In far off Vietnam, trouble is brewing. Trouble that will affect the Cassidy clan in the most terrible way.

Back at home, Sullivan is reaching his own conclusions, and uncovering another way in which foreign policy has impacted upon the Cassidys…

And in time, Sullivan comes to realise that sometimes the people who ought to be the most trustworthy, are actually the most treacherous.

As the story hurtles to its gripping conclusion, it would seem that they may not yet have finished with the Cassidy family…

Promises to Keep is an epic tale of an alternative reality – a compelling story in its own right, and one that also allows the reader to speculate upon what might have happened, had the actual events of November 1963 been slightly different.

Praise for Geroge Bernau

‘A story of conspiracy and corruption, of assassination, of regicide. For a generation of Americans, it is the story of their age.’ – Gary Hart, Los Angeles Times

‘Bernau accurately paints recognizable characters jousting for political power … Sharp-edged cutting between these players and a host of dangerous, shadowy conspirators keeps the tension running high’ – Publishers Weekly

‘What Bernau has done, without intending it, is to invent a fertile new fictional genre the “what if … if only” school of fiction’ – The Guardian

‘A real page-turner … Never has the Kennedy myth been more dramatically rendered!’ – David Horowitz, co-author of The Kennedys An American Dream

George Bernau worked as a motion-picture studio executive at Universal Studios in Hollywood for several years before leaving to study law at the University of Southern California. After graduating with honours, he began practising with a major law firm in San Diego, where he became a full partner in 1979.

This is a book that I have looked for for over 30 years! Thanks to Bob's Beach Books in Lincoln City, they helped me find it! Great detective work. It was pretty controversial when in came out because it was about an FBI agent who was investigating the Kennedy shooting. In this book, he lives but a lot of the events are historical. It explores the second shooter idea and who was behind the shooting. Totally happy to be able to read it again!

Promises To Keep edition by George Bernau Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

What if JFK had survived the events of November 22, 1963? George Bernau explores the possibilities (with all names changed - JFK is now John Trelawney Cassidy). Bernau creates a very plausible scenario as to the chain of command and the problems faced by Cassidy and his family, and the Vice President. The novel also explores the mystery behind who did the shooting, and the disappearances and "accidental deaths" of those who get too close to the truth. Though purely fiction, it could be easily mistaken for history, and page-turningly-written history at that. Highly recommended.
Promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep. I remember vividly the events of 11-22-1963, and have always thought there was more to the story than the American public has ever been told. I'm certain that we'll never know the truth of the matter. I did thoroughly enjoy reading the "what if" version though. It was a compelling story that kept me spell bound.
...and I am glad he did. This was a good read, made more interesting by the many historical events referenced. Plan to get his next two books.
I read this book several years ago and wanted to read it again. It's excellent! Buy it and you won't regret it.
That is, if you're interested in the Kennedy family.
As alternative histories go, George Bernau's "Promises to Keep" is merely okay. His premise was simple "What if JFK had survived the assassination attempt? And to a lesser degree "What if there WAS a second gunman, on the hill, not just a pathetic little man in a window of the Texas Book Depository?"

From there, you would expect a full-blown conspiracy novel, full of details of why the Cuban exile community, aided by American Mafia, wanted the president dead. But details of that made-up conspiracy, while numerous, were treated like afterthoughts, apparently presented to make the book more appealing to the majority of US citizens who cling to various conspiracy theories about JFK's assassination.

Bernau's real story--his alternative history--dealt with what would happen with JFK living. Unfortunately, that history, while plausible, is disappointing not much change at all. In fairness to the author, that may well have been the case. We'll never know, will we?

No other "spoilers" will be presented here to ruin future readers' enjoyment; on the other hand, I wouldn't recommend that anyone bother. The story is too cautious in its plotting, too timid in its portrayal of the characters involved, and too reserved in its view of possible historical outcomes--as if Bernau was terribly afraid of being sued by the real-life characters or berated by future historian. Indeed, Bernau went so far as to change the names of everyone involved JFK, RFK, J. Edgar Hoover, Lyndon Johnson, Barry Goldwater, Hubert Humphrey--everyone except Fidel Castro.

I prefer my alternative history books to at least use real names, not fictional place-holders modeled on real people--where's the fun in that?
What if John Kennedy lived...was there a second shooter...who was in on the assassination...would we have stayed in Vietnam? I loved the book! Took a while to get into it, but, after about 100 pages, I was hooked. Excellent read!
I was in high school when Kennedy was assassinated, so I was intrigued by the premise of the president surviving the attempt on his life. Granted there are some fairly dry political discussions in the book but the character development and storyline are excellent enough to overcome this.

(SPOILER ALERT!)- I was so shocked and outraged when Agent Sullivan was killed that I had to put the book aside for 2 days before I continued reading. It is that intense!

I am an avid reader, devouring several books per month, and Promises to Keep is my all time favorite...I've read it 3 times and it is on my bookshelf waiting for the next time.

I would recommend this to every reader in America.

This would make an excellent movie.
